Adam Silver says LaVar Ball’s turn to stay in his lane is fast approaching.
The NBA commissioner told “Mike and Mike” on ESPN Radio Wednesday that the blowhard father of top prospect Lonzo will ease up on his interminable family marketing campaign once his son’s name is called at the draft next month.
“I think here, if I were an NBA team looking at Lonzo Ball, I’m not sure how much consideration I would give to his father,” said Silver, who called LaVar's ability to attract attention "quite incredible," per ESPN. “I think ultimately the issue is, how much game does Lonzo have, how great a player can he be.
“I think his dad will invariably settle down once his son is drafted and a team has the appropriate discussions with him. So I’m not concerned about that.”
As Lonzo’s top promoter, LaVar has seized every opportunity to draw the spotlight, even if it has reflected poorly on the elder Ball along the way.
After claiming during Lonzo’s days at UCLA that his son is “better than Steph Curry,” LaVar said that he himself could have beaten Michael Jordan one-on-one.
LaVar also drew criticism after blaming UCLA’s loss in the Sweet 16 on the Bruins’ “three white guys” and for comments about LeBron James’ kids.
His rambunctious remarks, however, didn’t prevent him from meeting with Nike, Adidas and Under Armour in order to pitch his billion-dollar plan for his family’s Big Baller Brand apparel company. The three giants all declined his proposal.
LaVar’s latest — and perhaps greatest — misstep came earlier this month during an interview with Colin Cowherd show on Fox Sports 1. After FS1 co-host Kristine Leahy asked why Big Baller Brand — and its $495 sneakers — haven’t been marketed to women, LaVar ordered Leahy to “stay in your lane” while refusing to look at her.
Later in the interview, LaVar said: “I never disrespect women. If you act like that, something’s coming to you.”
Within two weeks, “Stay In Yo Lane” T-shirts were up on the company website and priced at $50 a pop.
Lonzo, whose younger brothers LaMelo and LiAngelo are the future subjects of LaVar’s very public PR campaign, is reportedly set to work out with the Lakers — LaVar’s one and only choice for his son — in early June.
Though Silver may not be worried about LaVar, any team that drafts Lonzo can look forward to taking his dad, too.
