A fast-moving fire in a Yonkers apartment building killed one person and forced dozens more into the snow-covered streets early Wednesday, according to officials and media reports.
The fire started in a fifth-floor apartment of the six-story building on Hawley Terrace about 4 a.m., officials said. Victims were taken out on stretchers.
One victim died, according to WCBS.
Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick told The Journal News that a hydrant was frozen as firefighters tried to knock down the blaze. Icy roads also slowed the response.
Resident Andre Geraghty told WCBS he helped his wife and their 16-month-old baby down a fire escape after smoke prevented their exit through a door.
“When I first opened the door, we saw smoke and that’s when I got my family,” Geraghty said. “Terrifying and scary but I’m just happy we are safe and most of our neighbors are safe.”
The Red Cross was on scene helping displaced residents.
