Latarsha Sanders, 43, pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder Tuesday in the deaths of her sons, 5-year-old Lason Brito and 8-year-old Edson Brito.

Police responded to Sanders' apartment Monday after a neighbor called 911 saying she was a having a medical issue.

There, police found Lason Brito with a bandage on his neck under a blanket and Edson was in another room with injuries, the Boston Globe reported.

“We believe, based upon her comments, that she was involved in some sort of rituals that she believed in,” said Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz, according to the Globe. “We don't have a lot of clarity to a lot of the things she was saying at this point.”

Family members told investigators Sanders practiced voodoo, CBS Boston reported. Investigators haven’t said whether the slayings were voodoo related.

Sanders told police she attacked Edson with a kitchen knife and stabbed him 50 times to complete the ritual, but was unsuccessful. She said she then killed the second boy.

She reportedly placed the boys’ bodies in beds, mopped up the blood and left the knife in the sink.

In interviews with police, Sanders said the killings had to do with “voodoo stuff” and initially blamed her 16-year-old daughter for the gruesome acts saying she “wanted a little blood.” The girl wasn’t harmed.

No records showed Sanders was mentally ill, but her mother told police her daughter was “mentally unstable and crazy,” according to the newspaper.

Her next court appearance is April 9.
