Josh McDaniels turns down Colts head coaching job, will stay with Patriots and eventually replace Bill Belichick: report

McDaniels, who the Colts said Tuesday had agreed to become the team's new head coach, will return to the Patriots as offensive coordinator instead.

Eventually, McDaniels will replace Bill Belichick and take over head coaching duties in New England, according to a sports radio host in Denver.

Indianapolis believed they had found their new coach earlier in the day and even tweeted about the hire.

“We are excited to welcome Josh McDaniels, who has agreed to terms as our new head coach,” the team wrote on Twitter.

The Colts were set to introduce McDaniels as their new coach at a press conference on Wednesday. They have since canceled the presser and erased all tweets about McDaniels.

"After agreeing to contract terms to become the Indianapolis Colts’ new head coach, New England Patriots assistant coach Josh McDaniels this evening informed us that he would not be joining our team," the Colts said in a statement. "Although we are surprised and disappointed, we will resume our head coaching search immediately and find the right fit to lead our team and organization on and off the field."

Since the Patriots' Super Bowl loss to the Eagles on Sunday, Kraft had conversations with McDaniels about staying with New England. The result was Kraft "sweetening" McDaniels' deal, according to ESPN.

New England, in particular Kraft, reportedly still has bad blood with the Colts over the Deflategate scandal of 2015.

"(Kraft) will forever try and (expletive) that place ever since deflategate," a source told ESPN.

The Patriots will play the Colts at Gillette Stadium in the upcoming regular season.
