Prince and his ex-wife Mayte Garcia never truly managed to move on after the tragic loss of their son just days after his birth, Garcia says.
Garcia, who was
“I don’t think he ever got over it,” Garcia told People in a new interview. “I don’t know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.”
Garcia, now 43, and Prince were overjoyed when they first learned she was expecting, but grew concerned when she experienced bleeding during her pregnancy, according to the magazine.
Their doctor advised them to undergo an amniocentesis procedure in an effort to diagnose potential genetic irregularities, but Prince didn’t think it was a good idea after learning such a process could lead to a miscarriage.
“My husband said, ‘No, we’re not doing that,'” Garcia writes in her new memoir, “The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince.”
At one point during her pregnancy, an ultrasound came back with atypical measurements, raising the possibility that the baby could have a form of dwarfism.
Their obstetrician warned that other possible diagnoses could be life-threatening, but Prince didn’t want to resort to medical intervention, Garcia writes in her book.
Garcia underwent a C-section, and the baby was born on Oct. 16, 1996. His condition, Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, is often characterized by the premature fusing of certain bones in the skull, as well as other genetic irregularities of the body.
“They brought the baby over to us,” Garcia wrote. “He was curled on his side, gasping shallow little gulps of air. Because there were no lids to blink, his eyes looked startled and dry. I caught hold of his tiny hand, saying over and over, ‘Mama loves you, Mama’s here.'”
Doctors performed multiple procedures on Amiir, but they were unable to save him and he died at six days old.
Garcia told People it was hard reliving moments like these as she wrote her new book.
“I’ve been making notes of my life but when it finally came time to write it, it took me back and I cried many tears,” she told the magazine. “But I also think that it’s liberating.”
Prince died at the age of 57 last year from an accidental drug overdose.
Garcia was the first of his two wives. The “Purple Rain” singer was also married to Manuela Testolini from 2001 to 2006.
