A 6-year-old girl in North Carolina was fatally shot by her 11-year-old cousin who was showing off his new shotgun he received for Christmas.
The boy was handling the weapon in front of Victoria Whitehurst and a 12-year-old girl when it went off, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
When first responders arrived at the scene, they found that Victoria had died from her injuries.
Victoria was visiting the home in Pinetown when the tragic accident took place on Tuesday. The boy and the girl were cousins and were close, according to WNCT.

"They got along great," family friend Jennifer Gray told the station. "They were more like brother and sister a lot of the times because, you know, Victoria was here a lot."
"He’s a good boy," neighbor Kaliff Moore told the station. "But, phew, I just can’t imagine how the family is now. We just need prayers up there for them."
The sheriff is looking into whether any charges should be filed, according to WITN, since the shotgun was not securely placed.
A GoFundMe page has already raised more than $4,000 for Victoria's family.
