Trevor Noah opens up about the tragic day his stepfather shot his mother in the head

The 33-year-old, who was born to a black mother and a white father during Apartheid in South Africa, recently opened up to People about the terrifying time in his life when his stepfather shot his mother in the back of the head — luckily, she survived.

His abusive stepfather shot his mother Patricia in 2009 and the bullet went through the back of her head completely and out through her nose. The gunshot missed her brain and arteries.

Noah, who detailed his stepfather’s abuse in his memoir “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood,” revealed how he was able to fight back his anger and come to terms with what occurred — and it was all thanks to how his mom handled the tragedy.

"I remember after the shooting, my mother was in the hospital, and all I felt was rage," the comedian said.

"My mother said to me, 'Don't hate him for doing this, but rather pity him because he too is a victim, in his own way, of a world that has thrust upon him an idea of masculinity that he has subscribed to and is now a part of. As for myself, I do not wish to imbue myself with a hatred that only I will carry.' "

It took a while for Noah to understand what his mother meant by the comment, but once he did, he chose to live his life every day in the way she did.

"I think watching my mom, her growth post-shooting, our family and the way we became stronger, really became the example that I chose to live by," he said.

In 2015, Noah's grandmother Nomalizo Noah told the Daily Mail that Patricia's husband also tried to hunt him down and kill her son after leaving the mother for dead.

Noah's stepfather was charged with attempted murder in South Africa, but only received probation.
