Every dog has its day — even those working security in city jails.
A city Correction Department K-9 fled from her owner’s Suffolk County home Sunday and was scooped up by a neighbor who spotted the canine’s shield.
Kiera, a German shepard mix, ran off from handler Anthony Galasso’s backyard. The dog was found by someone on Maywood Drive in Mastic who reached out to Suffolk County cops, according to a police spokeswoman.
Correction officials denied the dog was lost. “She got into a neighbor’s yard for a few minutes,” said department spokesman Peter Thorne. Galasso could not be reached for comment.

Jail officers in the K-9 unit bring the dogs home after every tour. They are given approximately $700 from the department to cover food and medical care.
The dogs are pricey. They cost approximately $7,000 to purchase and are worth an estimated $20,000 once trained.
Critics say the K-9 unit has been in disarray since eight officers were suddenly transferred out last year.
The officers were moved out after they allegedly threatened a colleague who is feuding with another dog handler in the unit, according to multiple sources.
